Flip Flops. Sandals. Slippahs. Whatever you may call them, no mermaid wants to track sand into her mermaid cave when she brings over her salty sailor and sun-bleached surfer friends. Leave the sand on the beach with this beach-chic DIY: the perfect ocean-inspired shoe basket.
Braided beach baskets can cost upwards of $50 at coastal decor stores, but here at The Vogue Mermaid we understand that those dollars can go towards more valuable pursuits (can we say *travel fund*). So, we’ve composed this pinterest-worthy shoe basket DIY with all the coastal flair at a fraction of the cost.
Let’s dive right in!
All you’ll need is:
- a braided basket
- a few starfish and two large shells
- two wine corks
- a small plank of wood and paint/paintbrush
- an oversized pillowcase
- hot glue gun
- a piece of woven string
- 12 inches of fishing line
First, and foremost, uncork your bottles of wine. (*Save the wine for later, mermaid, you’ve got a DIY to do!*)
Next, take your hot glue gun, and glue the wine cork to the side of the basket, beneath the handles. This will provide a solid base to secure the curved seashell to the basket.
Once the glue dries and the cork is secure, line the top of the cork with glue and place the seashell on the cork.
Repeat on opposite side of the basket.
Next, let’s move to the front of the basket.
This is where you place your *super cute* sign. Now, we don’t know about you, but the last thing a polite mermaid wants to do when welcoming guests over is tell them “take off your shoes”. So, we decided to outfit our basket with a sign that tells guests for us! We found our sign at a local seashell shop for around $5, but you can just as easily make your own with some paints and a small plank of wood.
Our sign is a little more subtle- it says, “love, peace, & sandy feet”– a friendly reminder that the mermaid cave is a shoe-free zone.
However, you can paint a sign that says virtually anything you’d like!
“No shirt, no shoes, no problem”
“Mahalo for removing your slippahs”
“If you’re not barefoot, you’re overdressed”.
“You can shake the sand from your shoes, but it will never leave your soul”
“Drop your flip-flops at the door”
Or, for the straightforward mermaid, simply a colorful sign that says “shoes”.
Once you have your sign, take some woven string and glue it to the top of your sign, on both the left and right upper corners. Leave 3-5 inches of extra string in the middle, since this will be how you will hang your sign. Secure the woven string to the upper center of the basket by tying it with fishing line.
(Or, if you’d rather not hang your sign, simply use your glue gun to secure your sign to the upper center of the basket.)
Next, take your starfish, and glue three of them underneath the sign using the glue gun.
Finally, take your oversized pillowcase, and fold it so it fits inside the basket. This is going to act as the liner for your basket, catching any sand from the shoes.
We chose a sand colored pillowcase, but depending on the decor of your home or the season, you can choose any color you’d like- some colors we’d recommend are a stark white, sea-foam green, sky blue, or navy for a more nautical vibe.
(Tip: Don’t glue the pillowcase down, just leave it at the bottom of the basket- this way, when it gets dirty you can just remove it from the basket and toss it in the washing machine.)
So there you have it! A beach-chic shoe basket, with all the coastal flair at half the cost. The best part is, you can customize this DIY however you like. Want more seashells? Add more seashells of all different sizes. Going for a nautical theme? Try adding some blue and white striped ribbon around the top of the basket, or wrapped through the handles.
The possibilities are *endless*.
Now go call up your mermaid, surfer, and salty sailor friends, kick off those sandals in your beach-chic shoe basket, and break out those bottles of wine!
